Post # 1- Yet another website dedicated to photography… “There are many like it, but this one is mine.”
With it, I will explore anything, any subject one can express via the photographic process. Especially the techniques and methods used by ‘creative types’ to make their works of art. Have you ever cobbled together a tool or special hardware to score the image you were after? I’ll share the things I’ve made in the past and how I did it. In the process, I hope to hear from those who adapt to the situation, ‘think outside the box’, did what they needed to do to get the image they were after. Innovators tend to have a different view.
Later on, I will open the site up to guests…
Do interviews of those who bring a unique perspective to the craft.
We all need to make a living. Financial success is important, but it’s not my criteria for what’s presented here. Nor am I interested in fads or fashion whimsy. Film is as important as digital. No question will go unasked. Is fine art photography art? Is THAT art?
Can I make money doing that?
The Internet has flipped photography on its head. Social media has flipped photography on its head, as have smart phones and tablets. Digital imaging changed how all of us worked in less than 6 years. The gear we have today is simply marvelous. Though some would argue things were better ‘back when’, I would have to disagree. Change is the one thing we cannot prevent… we may be able to influence change, but it’s coming, ready or not.
Doing video from your digital camera? I want to hear about that too!
Design details about the site itself-
This is a WordPress site. WordPress has become my best friend, when it comes to effective blogging. It has matured over the last few years and can be made quite secure with a little ‘tweaking’. If you have ANY ambitions of doing your own Blog, this is the way to go. Did I mention WordPress is free?
WordPress Themes… K.I.S.S.- Keep it Simple, Silly
Themes are the ‘skin’ of a WordPress CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) site. It’s how you give a WordPress site its unique look and feel. Though it is possible to score a ‘free’ or commercially produced WordPress theme off the net (there are hundreds, if not thousands), this theme was originally created using Artisteer. Five years ago, that was a good choice. Things change. It has since been updated and now uses themes from StudioPress, creators of the Genesis Framework and WP Engine specialized hosting where security and maintenance is included with free StudioPress themes and free Genesis Framework. This is the fourth site I’ve built this way. This site was customized on the LifestylePro Theme from StudioPress. The easy to use customizing tools and their fast customer support made it pretty easy to get a look that was all mine. If you were to buy a theme from Studiopress using my link, I would receive a small commission, but If I did not love it, I wouldn’t show you where I got it.
Supposedly, the latest version of Adobe’s Dreamweaver will create WP themes, but I have not had a chance to mess with it. The only ‘art’ created for the theme was the header graphic. That collage was done in Photoshop.
I settled on a 960 pixel wide site since this would display well on any computer’s Web browser or tablet. In fact, I proof what I do from an iPad so I know it’s easy to view and surf. Smart phones and tablets will come to dominate the Internet if they haven’t already.
There is one other fun tool I use for selecting a color palette for my sites. Kuler is an online tool made available by Adobe. There are 1,000’s of existing Kuler palettes to check out, can be searched by key words or simply create your own. You can do a screen grab of what you like or sign up and save your palettes from within Kuler. That way you can share them with others.
I’m still far away from calling this site ‘ready for prime-time’.
Many more details need to be ironed out before getting down to regular posts. In the mean time, I want to hear from you and your friends. Even though I have lots of ideas for posts, I’m open to yours.
Last, but not least, this site is open to everyone, but is intended for mature audiences. While nudes are not out of the question, porn is not tolerated. Nor will I tolerate rude or vulgar language. ALL comments are moderated.
I’ll close with my most favorite photo quote:
